Hatha Yoga
From the Sanskrit word meaning “union (yoga) of the sun (ha) and moon (tha) [principles]”): a branch of yogic discipline, designed to regulate the energy in the body and mind. The practice traditionally consists of asana (postures), pranayama (breathwork) as well as mudra (seals, hand postures) and bandas (internal locks).

All asana-based yoga classes are at their root hatha classes and most of our classes incorporate all of the above aspects of yogic practice (postures as well as breathing exercises, seals and locks). Hatha classes at Chi will focus on learning basic, intermediate and advanced asana, as well as the basic Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation series (see Vinyasa Yoga) performed in a warm room.

Vinyasa Yoga
A series of postures that flow from one to another by means of the breath. Emphasis is generating prana or energy, as well as heat in order to flush the system of toxins and improve mental clarity and integration of body, mind and breath.

Technically “vinyasa” is part of the Sun Salutation series. It has been adopted by yoga teachers and practitioners to denote any series of yoga postures linked by the breath performed in a warm room. Towels recommended.

Power Yoga
Some call Power Yoga the Westernized version of the Indian Ashtanga Yoga system. It is also a heat- and flow-based class with an emphasis on building strength and generating heat, but the poses and their order are at the discretion of the instructor. The room may be as warm or warmer as in a Vinyasa or Ashtanga class, so you may sweat as much or more! Towels are recommended.

Ashtanga Yoga
Literally “Eight Fold Path” of which asana (postures) are one “path.” The series of postures handed down to Sri T. Krishnamacharya and further developed by Pattabhi Jois are followed in strict order. Six series are included in the system, and typically one does not progress to the next without fully mastering the previous. The series are flow- and vinyasa-based, so building prana and heat in the body and eliminating toxins are the aims and benefits. Ashtanga Yoga is also performed in a warmed room, so towels are recommended.

Restorative Yoga
A class composed of passive yoga positions during which the body may be supported by props such as blankets and pillows. Breathing and relaxation are the focus. A perfect complement to more active classes, or for pregnant women or those with injuries or other physical limitations who want a slower, healing approach to yoga.
